Biological Dentistry FAQs

  • We focus on providing individualized care that aligns with each patient's unique health goals. We encourage patients to invest in their dental wellness upfront, prioritizing treatment quality and holistic health outcomes. We do not accept traditional insurance plans. All patients must pay at time of service, and we can submit claims to your insurance if they will directly reimburse you.

  • We prioritize the holistic health needs of adults ages 18+ seeking personalized dental solutions.

  • Our waitlist is typically longer than most traditional dental practices. You can expect to get an appointment within about six months, unless it is an emergency situation.

  • Howard Dental Center integrates holistic and traditional dentistry, focusing on whole-body health and minimally invasive treatments. We spend one-on-one time with every patient, getting to know them on a personal level. We prioritize patient involvement in care decisions, using biocompatible materials and seeking to prevent health issues by addressing their root causes.

  • We utilize high-quality, biocompatible materials to ensure the safety and health of our patients. As a mercury-free practice, we emphasize materials that complement our holistic approach to dentistry.

Q&As: TMJ and Airway

  • Malocclusion simply means your teeth don’t fit together in an ideal way. When the bite is imbalanced, your jaw joints and muscles often have to work harder to compensate, which can lead to strain, tension, and long-term breakdown of the TMJ (temporomandibular joint). We see this not as an isolated problem, but as part of the larger system involving your airway, posture, and muscle function.

  • TMJ issues can show up in ways you might not expect. Common signs include jaw pain, clicking or popping sounds when chewing, tension headaches, facial soreness, ear pain, difficulty opening wide, and even worn or cracked teeth. Many patients also experience neck tension, poor sleep, and teeth grinding — all signs that the jaw, muscles, and airway are not working in harmony.

  • We take a collaborative and thorough approach to diagnosis. During your initial exam, we’ll explore your symptoms, health history, and lifestyle. We perform a detailed evaluation of your jaw joints, muscles, bite, airway, and posture — often working alongside orthodontists, myofunctional therapists, and ENT specialists to fully understand the root cause of your concerns. Our goal is always to see the whole picture, not just one piece of it.

  • No two TMJ cases are alike. For some patients, the solution is as simple as learning new muscle habits or improving nasal breathing. For others, restoring the form and function of the bite, supporting the airway, or collaborating with specialists is key. Treatment might include bite adjustments, splint therapy, airway expansion, myofunctional therapy, posture work, or orthodontic solutions. Our focus is always on prevention, long-term comfort, and giving you the tools to support your own progress.

  • A healthy airway allows your body to get the oxygen it needs — especially at night. When the airway is narrow or obstructed, it can lead to snoring, disrupted sleep, fatigue, and even more serious health issues. By improving airway function through muscle therapy, structural support, or collaboration with ENT and orthodontic specialists, many patients experience better sleep, reduced clenching and grinding, and even improved overall health and energy.

  • Each patient’s journey is unique. Some people notice relief within weeks as muscle function improves, while others experience more gradual changes, especially if structural correction or orthodontic care is part of the plan. We’ll be with you every step of the way, helping you track progress and adjust the plan as your body begins to heal and adapt.

Q&As: Ceramic Implants

  • Ceramic dental implants are made from zirconia. This is a strong, white, biocompatible material.

  • Ceramic implants are metal-free, offering a hypoallergenic and aesthetically pleasing alternative to traditional titanium implants.

  • While ceramic implants are suitable for many people, we will complete a personalized assessment to confirm that this is the best solution for you.

  • As with any surgical procedure, risks include infection or implant failure, but these are minimized with experienced care and proper aftercare.

  • The procedure is generally performed under local anesthesia to ensure minimal discomfort. Many patients experience soreness after the procedure, but post-operative pain is manageable with prescribed care.

Q&As: Biological Dentistry

  • Preventative dental care is the foundation of lifelong oral and whole-body health. It includes regular cleanings, thorough exams, early diagnosis, and personalized guidance on daily habits — all designed to help you maintain healthy teeth, gums, and bone. At Howard Dental Center, prevention also means understanding how your dental health connects to your overall well-being, so you can make decisions that align with your long-term goals.

  • Intervals are set based upon the level of health of the patient. We find that those with a solid preventative regimen are able to sustain health on their own and don't need a cleaning every 6 months.

  • We help patients address a variety of oral infections, including gum disease (periodontal infection), tooth abscesses, failed root canal infections, and cavitations (areas of unhealed bone following tooth removal). Each diagnosis is approached thoughtfully, with your comfort, safety, and long-term wellness at the center of every recommendation.

  • The first step is always a thorough diagnosis using advanced imaging, clinical examination, and open conversation. We take the time to understand the root cause of the infection, whether it’s related to bite issues, systemic health, or past dental work. From there, we collaborate with you to create a treatment plan that reflects both your health priorities and biological principles — always aiming for the least invasive and most supportive path forward.

  • Oral infections can show up in different ways, including:

    • Swelling or tenderness in the gums or jaw

    • Sensitivity to pressure or temperature

    • Persistent bad taste or odor

    • Loose teeth or gum recession

    • Pain or discomfort (though not all infections are painful)

    • Fatigue or feeling "off" without clear cause

If you notice any of these signs, we recommend scheduling an appointment so we can help you understand what’s going on and how best to address it.

  • Ozone therapy uses highly energized oxygen to neutralize harmful bacteria, viruses, and fungi while supporting your body’s natural ability to heal. Ozone can penetrate tiny areas that traditional disinfectants can’t reach, making it a gentle but powerful tool in both infection control and prevention. We often use ozone as part of cavity treatment, gum therapy, post-surgical care, and for disinfecting areas prior to filling or sealing.

  • Ozone therapy is safe for most patients, though individual assessments determine suitability.

  • Frequency varies depending on the condition treated, but typically, we schedule ozone therapy alongside regular dental visits.

  • We use biocompatible, non-toxic materials that blend with your natural teeth.

  • Yes, our crown alternatives offer both durability and a natural appearance.
